INSTRUCTIONS
This "musical manipulative" allows you to play around with the opening movement of Beethoven's
Symphony No. 3 "Eroica."
To start the video playing (it may take a bit of time to load), click the play arrow
.
Pages turn automatically as the music plays, but you may use the score arrows to turn pages when paused.
Below the video is a detailed analysis of the movement's
sonata form structure.
The analysis refers mostly to themes (with key areas below) using the following abbreviations:
- PT = Primary Theme
- Tr = Transition Theme
- ST = Secondary Theme
- CT = Closing Theme
- NT = New Theme
|
THE MAGIC PART!
Click on any of the elements in the analysis; the video and score will each jump to the right place.
You can also manipulate the video using the following buttons:
Slow Down
Normal Speed
Speed Up
Jump Back 10 secs
Jump Forward 10 secs
Note this guide also lets you switch orchestras on the fly(!) - just click the button above the video.
The "big bangs" are somewhat arbitrarily chosen moments of heavily accented chords which can be thought of as "signposts" along the way. If you click the words "Big Bangs," the entire series will play as a sort of extremely condensed version of the piece. Click "Big Bangs" again to stop them from playing automatically.
